One of Scotland's largest independent accountancy practices currently requires a VAT Assistant to joins its Tax team

The Firm

The Practice offers a range of accounting and financial services including wealth management, cloud accounting, personal and corporate tax, R&D funding, audit, business restructuring, personal insolvency, payroll, HR services and entrepreneurial services

The Role

The role will primarily involve providing compliance and administrative support to the firms' UK and European clients in relation to their VAT returns

Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Providing compliance processing and administration services on behalf of European clients
  • Providing general administrative support to the VAT technical department. 
  • Liaising with overseas partner firms and obtaining the necessary information and documentation in order to support UK VAT registration applications.
  • Ensuring UK VAT return and statistical reporting requirements are met for overseas clients. 
  • Reviewing information and documents provided to prepare and submit VAT registration applications to HMRC; 
  • Corresponding with HMRC via letter, email and telephone on a regular basis; 
  • Collating VAT return information received electronically;
  • Preparing and submitting UK VAT returns and other statistical forms electronically to HMRC;
  • Monitoring deadlines and updating spreadsheets and client management databases on a daily basis;
  • Previous experience of VAT would be beneficial although it is not essential as full training will be provided.
  • Drafting monthly fees for EU compliance clients

The Person

  • Must be fully IT literate and capable of understanding new systems quickly
  • Have the ability to process information quickly and efficiently
  • Ability to work unsupervised for periods of time
  • Excellent communication skills in order to deal with correspondence to and from HMRC both written and verbally
  • Good general competency on Excel spreadsheets
  • Around 1 years’ experience (or more) working in a finance role,
  • An interest in working in an indirect tax related role, although it is not expected for the candidate to have in-depth technical VAT knowledge
