The Scottish Gallery is a pedigree commercial art gallery in central Edinburgh. The company specialises in Scottish artists from the 1900’s onwards; and also applied art (craft) by contemporary worldwide artists. It celebrates its 175th birthday this year.

The Role

The Scottish Gallery is looking for a part-time Accountant (3 days a week) who seeks a long-term role within the Company. You will report to the Finance Director, who also works part time: hence you will be comfortable working autonomously.

The company is currently introducing a new sales and stock accounting system and will shortly also move to a new ledger package. You will be confident in double-entry and accounting principles, a transition in which you will play a key part.

Technical Requirements

You will be an experienced accountant and book-keeper, and have sound VAT knowledge, ideally with regard to import and export. A minority of transactions are complex, which makes them interesting, provided you enjoy some complexity.

You will be proficient in Excel, and have a thorough understanding of sales, purchase and nominal ledgers. Experience of electronic tills will be helpful.

On Offer

The position of Accountant will offer a salary up to £27,000 pro rata. The benefits package will also include pension, profit share and staff discounts.

You will be involved in, but not restricted to the following duties:

  • Monthly posting of receipts and payments
  • Monthly cash analysis and journal posting
  • Expenses analysis and journal posting
  • Bank, supplier statement and stock reconciliation
  • Sending out remittance advice
  • Sales processing and analysis
  • Follow-on transactions from sales
  • Assisting with the preparation of monthly accounts and quarterly VAT return
  • Assisting with preparation of annual accounts and audit

To be considered for this opportunity you must have the following experience:

  • A minimum of 3 years practical experience of operating as an accountant
  • Commercial, analytical work
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to interact with colleagues, artists and customers

In short, the position is an interesting and varied one in a highly-respected art gallery, working with great people and with the opportunity to learn from an experienced FD.
