Position Title:                Financial Accountant

Responsible to:            Financial Accounting Controller

Job Purpose

The main purpose of the role is to:-

  • assist in delivering a world class accounting service to our European businesses,
  • perform general accounting and reporting activities on behalf of a European site(s),
  • identify and implement process improvements that support the efficient and effective services provided,
  • drive continuous improvement in the quality of statutory reporting and associated financial controls and
  • be involved in high profile projects that will shape the future of a newly established shared service centre team.

The position gives the opportunity to work with our P2P and O2C teams within the Shared Service Centre and our Centre of Excellence colleagues to ensure that all processes are understood and supported.

The European Accounting hub is based at Heriot Watt Research Park on the outskirts of Edinburgh which is easily accessible via public transports and has parking facilities available onsite. 

Duties:

  • Provide appropriate and timely financial reports covering various metrics as required by site management.
  • Support group and divisional reporting requirements.
  • Identify and address areas of improvement to facilitate a smarter close process.
  • Own month end activities as assigned to the role.
  • Ensure that all monthly balance sheet accounts are fully reconciled with supporting evidence on a timely basis in line with group deadlines.
  • Prepare company reporting schedules for submission to group.
  • Assist in the planning, preparation and delivery of statutory reports, internal and external audits, tax returns and other government returns.
  • Review, develop and monitor accounting policies, procedure and processes.
  • Work closely with the internal controls team to ensure compliance to Sarbanes Oxley rules and support the audit process.
  • Responsible for building and maintaining excellent relationships with both internal and external key stakeholders 
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned and support other team members in achieving the team’s objectives.
  • Undertake any other tasks as reasonably requested by your line manager and to ensure that your work is conducted in a cooperative and flexible manner.
  • Responsible for ensuring that work is conducted in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures, where applicable, to Charles River’s standard of quality. 
  • Responsible for ensuring that a safe working environment is maintained for yourself and your colleagues by observing all safety procedures and working methods, by making proper use of protective clothing and equipment, and by reading, understanding and following all safety documents issued or notified to you. 

Knowledge/Skills/Experience:

  • Qualified Accountant – ACCA, ICAS, ICAEW, CIMA
  • Experience of both financial and management accounting
  • UK GAAP and IFRS experience
  • European GAAP, Compliance and VAT experience would be advantageous but not essential
  • European languages experience would be advantageous but not essential – Dutch, German, French, Nordics etc. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to interact, engage and influence senior stakeholders
