Job description

Role: Reporting to the Managing Director & Board the financial performance of SHARE Scotland and for The Share Trust and ensure the long-term financial viability of the organisation.

Tasks & Responsibilities

  • Assist the Managing Director to meet the strategic direction as set out by the Board, and minimise risks to the organisation
  • Lead, direct and up-skill the finance team in daily, weekly and monthly routines 
  • Oversee all transactional activities to ensure the adequate system of cost control and close monitoring of income from customers and payments to suppliers
  • Prepare the monthly management accounts with analysis and supporting commentary for discussion with the senior management team. These accounts are broken down by region and individual service
  • Preparation and presentation of financial reports and forecasts to Board of Trustees, who meet 6 times a year
  • Preparation of annual budget and in-year forecasting processes, liaising with, and supporting, operational managers to ensure that procedures are understood, and timetables communicated 
  • Support operational managers in the production of tender submissions, advising on costing information and forecasts, assumptions, risks and opportunities 
  • Ensure the appropriate accounting, audit procedures, and financial controls are in place, and liaising closely with external auditors
  • Preparation of the statutory accounts, under charities SORP and ensuring all annual returns are completed accurately, filed with OSCR, and within the required timescales
  • Responsible for the IT structure, IT security, and IT performance of the organisation, you will also act as the first point of contact with the outsourced IT support provider
  • Ensure there is sound and robust Internal Control over the finances of our Service Users, providing relevant information and reports to their Guardians 
  • As Company Secretary you will also ensure that the Rules of the organisation are updated as required and that adequate insurances are in place
  • Represent the organisation at various meetings, including service review and contract negotiations with external parties and stakeholders  

In addition to the role of Finance Director, you will serve on the Board of SHARE Scotland and Share Trust and directly contribute to the strategic decision-making process of the organisation. You will also be expected to observe the following code of conduct. 

  • You will act in the interests of SHARE Scotland and declare any conflicts of interest
  • You will operate in a manner consistent with SHARE Scotland’s purpose and value
  • You will act with due care and diligence
  • You will, along with other Trustees, work to ensure that SHARE Scotland complies with its legal obligations
  • You will always maintain confidentiality on sensitive issues  
  • You will raise concerns formally to the Chair when appropriate (please see Whistleblowing Policy)
  • You will follow the Gifts and Hospitality Policy and Expenses Policy
  • You will always act calmly and reasonably and respect the views of other Trustees  


Key to success

The successful candidate will be an accomplished finance professional with the desire to undertake and assume responsibility for activities out-with finance to ensure the continued success of the charity. 

Key skills, experience and knowledge:

  • Qualified accountant with a proven track record in financial management and strategic planning 
  • Experience of leading and managing a finance function, ensuring it delivers high standards and meets both internal and external deadlines 
  • Previous experience of continuous improvement and developing robust financial controls and procedures 
  • Strong IT skills with experience of utilising IT to deliver efficiencies 
  • Direct involvement in providing commercial advice, guidance and support to operational staff
  • Experience of contributing to strategic management decision-making process through the provision of meaningful financial information and analysis 
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to get “behind the numbers” allowing informed and commercial decisions 
  • Excellent communication and negotiating skills coupled with the ability to develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders 
  • Previous experience within the social care or voluntary sector would be advantageous  


Package on offer

Salary:                         £45,000 - £50,000 per annum

Benefits:                     Defined Contribution Pension Scheme (4% employer, 4% employee)

Annual Leave:            32 days (including statutory holidays)
