Job Description

  • Position:                      Commercial Director
  • Role Type:                   Non – Executive Director
  • Responsible to:           Chair and Board of Triathlon Scotland
  • Term:                          3 years renewable for a further 3 years            

 

Role Purpose

To act as a Director of Triathlon Scotland in the best interests of the Company, its members, employees, partners, funding agencies, sponsors and of the communities within which the Company operates. This involves playing a full part in enabling the Board to arrive at balanced and objective decisions and to ensure that the objectives of the Company, as agreed by the Board, are fully, promptly and properly carried out. Specifically, the Commercial Director is responsible for developing the Triathlon Scotland’s commercial strategy, identifying commercial opportunities and monetizing the Company’s assets.

 

Organisational Structure

The Commercial Director is an officer of the Board and a Non – Executive Director, appointed by the Board in accordance with the Articles of Association with specific responsibility for commercial strategy, working with staff in Triathlon Scotland.

 

Key Responsibilities

Commercial

  • review and advise on the company’s commercial strategy and provide informed advice and support to the Board on business development;
  • provide advice and counsel to the Company’s senior management responsible for commercial matters in diversifying and increasing the Company’s commercial opportunities and partnerships;
  • suggest ways to develop and launch new commercial opportunities in line with the company purpose, values and strategy is achieved;
  • report to the Board annually on the effectiveness of Company’s commercial strategy, taking account of the views of the other individual directors.

Board Responsibilities:

  • ensure that the decisions of the Board are fully, promptly and properly carried out;
  • challenge and contribute to the development of strategy constructively;
  • scrutinise the performance of management in meeting agreed goals and objectives and monitor the reporting of performance;
  • satisfy him/her self that the integrity of financial information and that financial controls and systems of risk management are robust and defensible;
  • ensure that s/he is consulted upon and participates in: the appointment and dismissal of the Chief Executive and other senior managers; succession planning;
  • ensure that s/he is consulted upon and receives adequate information in a timely fashion about the finances, proposed strategy plans and activities that would have a Material Effect on the Company;
  • ensure that s/he has access to such key managers and professional advisors of the Company as may be required to enable the Director to perform his/her duties;
  • ensure that s/he fully understands: the business of the Company and its services; the sport in which the Company operates; the roles of staff in the Company; the Company's organisation, structure and methods of working;
  • ensure that s/he understands the views of major funding partners and sponsors;
  • attend a comprehensive, formal and tailored induction;
  • seek continually to develop and refresh knowledge and skills to ensure any contribution to the Board remains informed and relevant;
  • ensure that any concerns which cannot be resolved about the running of the Company or a proposed action are recorded in the Board minutes; on resignation provide a written statement to the President, for circulation to the Board, with regard to any such concerns.

 

Main Role Requirements

Knowledge and Experience:

  • A proven track record of success as a team player and delivering strategic objectives
  • Experience of working on or with a Board or management committee
  • A sound working knowledge of the sport and the public and private sectors
  • Proven ability to build and maintain strong, transparent relationships with key stakeholders
  • Ability to support, challenge and manage a relationship with other Directors, Committee members, volunteers and staff

Skills and expertise:

  • Willingness to participate in the governance of Triathlon Scotland and the Board
  • An understanding of the legal duties and responsibilities of a Company Director
  • Strategic perspective, vision and ability to work positively with a team

Personal Qualities:

  • Strong Interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills and the ability to develop effective, sustainable partnerships
  • A commitment to the sport and the organisation
  • Dynamic, enthusiastic and positive
  • Listen sensitively to the views of others
  • A willingness to devote the necessary time and effort
  • An ability to listen well to others and to accept constructive criticism

Regular Annual Commitments

  • 6 evening meetings of the Triathlon Scotland Board
  • Attendance at the AGM
  • Attendance at an annual board review day

Expenses

The position of Commercial Director, as with all other Non-Executive Directors is unpaid. All reasonable out of pocket expenses incurred on Triathlon Scotland business will be reimbursed.
