Human Development Scotland (HDS) is a charity working to improve the mental health and emotional wellbeing of individuals, families and communities in Scotland, and to increase the effectiveness of organisations.
For professionals caring for people in, or at risk of, mental or emotional distress, and those working with potentially vulnerable individuals, HDS provides training, professional development (CPD) and learning opportunities including conferences and seminars.
We also deliver counselling and psychotherapy directly to individuals and families, and as part of employee assistance programmes.
At the heart of all our work are the psychodynamic, psychoanalytic and systemic ideas that offer a profound understanding of how people relate to one another and the central role of human relationships in our mental health and emotional wellbeing.

To relieve mental and emotional distress by increasing the availability of, and access to, high quality psychodynamic and psychoanalytic counselling & psychotherapy for all who need them.
As the Chair of HDS, you will be responsible for the following:
Act as an ambassador for the organisation at meetings and events
Work with the trustees and CEO to set the strategic direction of the organisation
Oversee the governance of the organisation, ensuring transparency and in accordance with charity regulations and guidelines
Raise the profile of HDS
Expanding the number of trustees from the current six to 10
Support the development of collaborative relationships with all relevant stakeholders, such as members, regulatory bodies, universities, students, NHS etc
This is an unremunerated post, although expenses can be reimbursed
You will be required to attend 5-6 Board meetings per year plus two half-day strategy/planning sessions
This post will ideally be filled by Qtr 4 of this year with the initial job title of Chair Designate, transitioning to Chair following the AGM in March 2018 when the current Chair stands down.
In order to be considered for this post, you will ideally have:
Previous experience as a Trustee of a charitable organisation is essential (experience in the role of Chair would be an advantage)
Demonstrable experience of being instrumental in growing and developing an organisation
A professional qualification would be beneficial
Knowledge or experience of the mental health sector and counselling/psychotherapy
First class communication skills allowing you to act as the public face of the organisation
