iMultiply enjoyed discussing the diverse finance career landscape with our accounting and finance community on the terrace at the Radisson Collection Hotel. Fraser Robertson, Edinburgh Airport Senior Finance Business Partner and Margaret Laidlaw, Mazars Partner - Owner Managed and Family Business Services discussed their career journeys and lessons learned, whilst John Gilbertson, iMultiply Director provided a candid overview of the skills toolkit needed to thrive in finance.
Fraser Robertson began the evening by recounting his journey through RBS, Diageo and Edinburgh Airport, emphasising the importance of building a lasting network and highlighting that, 'financial analysis and systems control skills learnt from day one have been critical to my career...commercial exposure and hands on leadership skills are also important.'
He added, 'Learn what matters to you most but shed the rest, this is the best piece of advice I have ever had.'
John Gilbertson, iMultiply Director pointed out that judging the right time to move to your next finance role is critical, 'ask the question, what can you get out of your existing job and existing employer before you decide to leap.'
Our final speaker, Margaret Laidlaw rounded off the evening by confirming the importance of your network and ending with lively recommendations about identifying and seizing opportunities as they come along, 'look for secondments and opportunities...a colleague went to Australia and came back, it helped with their next career step.'
