We had a great event with our friends at Turcan Connell this morning, looking at Charity Boards and why the selection of charity board members is critical to the success of any charity’s governance.
Gavin McEwan gave us a valuable oversight of the legalities of operating as a Trustee and what OSCR say’s about Control and Independence in Scottish charities. He also highlighted some fantastic, if slightly scary, regulatory examples of what has happened in charities in the past when things haven’t quite gone to plan.
Kirsty MacKenzie and Debbie Shields covered our top 5 tips when recruiting a Trustee (Skills, Diversity, Eligibility, Attraction/Selection, Commitment). Which sparked some very good examples from the audience in terms of their own experiences/challenges when recruiting for or working with a Board. It was great to hear so many stories and experiences – thanks you for sharing them with us!
Graham Watson, spoke about his own experiences of being a member of various Boards and gave some key pointers for people to be aware of or consider when recruiting or considering joining a Board.
What really struck us about the event overall, was that all of the speakers had a number of common threads, which was echoed by many of the charities represented in the room. Which really shows that we can all hopefully work together to make sure the right people take up Trustee positions with the right charities.
