Spotlight on Chiene + Tait's Entrepreneurial Tax Team

Welcome to the first blog in our quarterly Spotlight series which takes a look at the businesses we work with and explores what makes them tick.

The Chiene + Tait Entrepreneurial Tax Team have become pre-eminent, market leading experts in the field of entrepreneurial taxes in Scotland.   The team is made up of a partner (Neil Norman), two tax supervisors, a tax senior and two tax trainees, supported by an additional tax partner.

Neil Norman, Entrepreneurial Tax Partner, spotted an opportunity to support Scotland’s burgeoning entrepreneurial and business angel community three years ago.  His team members are specialists in SEIS/EIS, share schemes and valuations, restructuring/refinancing, R&D tax credits, Patent Box and exit planning.

Neil comments – “Working in the world of entrepreneurs and business angels has been a rollercoaster ride.  There’s never a dull day working with our clients, whether it’s sourcing EIS clearance for a project, developing an investment teaser document to help source angel funding or arranging speed networking events between business incubators – there’s always something new!”

The team works in tandem with clients to ensure that all angles are considered – tax liabilities, access to reliefs and gaining HMRC clearance.  Kirsty Paton, Corporate Tax Trainee adds – “Since starting my job at C+T, I’ve worked with a range of clients from young entrepreneurs seeking investment for the first time, to sophisticated angel investors looking to maximise opportunities. There’s a constant buzz in the team as the opportunities to work on such a variety of clients and projects grow; every opportunity is completely different from the last.”

“A day can begin with drafting a request for advance assurance for SEIS/EIS, followed by some research on the best share scheme for a particular company to reward their employees and undertaking a share valuation then drafting an R&D report and preparing the corporation tax return. There’s constant interaction between our team and our Private Client team as we discuss current projects and developments; the variety ensures a constant learning curve.  I find I can end up working with my Private Client tax colleagues helping them with EIS and EMI queries on their clients – there is always plenty of variety.”

The Private Client Tax Team is also involved in many of our entrepreneurial projects, advising on complex personal tax issues such as share restructuring, interaction of CGT and IHT on EIS investments and introducing private clients to the benefits of angel investment.

By working across departments, our clients are assured that we understand no two projects are the same and receive a proactive service with a thorough approach to their requirements.  The Entrepreneurial Tax Team is directly providing Chiene + Tait with multiple opportunities to grow revenue and capacity now and for the long term.

In recognition of the work of the Entrepreneurial Group, members have recently found that they are shortlisted at the Scottish Accountancy Awards for Tax Team of the Year.  Neil explains – “When we found out that we are shortlisted at the Scottish Accountancy Awards, the team was delighted.  Industry recognition from your peers is great.  Whatever happens next, I am thoroughly proud of our team and the fantastic work they produce for our clients.”
